Meet Alicia our featured Breast Cancer Survivor!

My name is Alicia Tyner and I was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and BRCA 1 gene. my cancer diagnosis was in October(breast cancer awareness month) 2012. I had just turned 41 years old the month before. I never thought I would be diagnosed with any type of cancer let alone breast CANCER since I did my exams, BUT god had another plan for me. as I went through this journey of a lumpectomy on my right breast, full hysterectomy(no biological children), double mastectomy and reconstruction with one implant and one tissue breast. as I look back at the journey, I am thankful I survived because some do not. i am also mindful and more aware of other women that have or are going through this journey too. having a strong family and friends support system kept me grounded as well as my faith in god and his son Jesus Christ. I am in the last stretch of my cancer journey as it is 10 years since my diagnosis and I look forward to continuing it cancer free. I have grown tremendously and am blessed to have learned more about myself and breast cancer. I am actually thankful for this journey...so don't be sad for me be happy! be happy I survived! I thrive and I am happy! don't forget to do your breast exams and tell a family member, friend, co-worker, etc...early detection is key!
